Description
The visage of Che looks down from crumbling walls as a red 1954 Pontiac taxi passes by newer cars parked along the waterside artist market in Habana, Cuba. Captured in May, 2017.
There is an open-air market on the other side of the wall and we were waiting at our tourist bus for the rest of our team to return. I saw the Taxi approaching and had time to get 2 shots. To me, this one was magic. I increased saturation on the red '54 Pontiac, the wall and Che's likeness and reduced saturation on the more modern vehicles parked alongside the market. I slightly blurred the face of the passenger.
The title is a bit of word play. With relations with the U.S. thawing, the Cubans are anticipating a much needed boost to their economy. For that they are optimistic and "past tense". The other meaning to the title is that perhaps the increased levels of freedom allowed by Raul Castro's presidency will move Cuba from the past to the future.
My image "Habana Past Tense" was awarded 1st Place in the North Tampa Arts League's 2017 Annual Members Show hosted at the Carrollwood Cultural Center.
